Shakira and Gerard Pique were once one of the most famous couples in the world, but their 11-year relationship came to an end last summer. Since then, the Colombian pop star has been having the last laugh, while the former Barcelona defender has been struggling with his personal and professional life.
Shakira, who is known for her hits such as Hips Don't Lie and Waka Waka, has been constantly trolling her ex-partner over the past year, using her music, social media and awards to mock him and his new girlfriend, Clara Chia.
One of her most recent jabs was a song she released in collaboration with Argentine producer Bizarrap, which won Best Pop Song at the Latin Grammy Awards in Seville last week. The song, titled 'Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53', has been dubbed a 'diss track' towards Pique, as it contains lyrics such as 'I'm too good for you — and that’s why you’re with someone just like you' and 'You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo and a Rolex for a Casio'.
To make matters worse, the award was presented by Pique's former Spain team-mate Sergio Ramos, who had a fierce rivalry with him when he played for Real Madrid. Ramos then posed with his arm around Shakira, which led to the singer's lawyer joking that she would have saved herself 'more than £100million' if she had fallen in love with the defender instead of Pique, after she agreed to pay a £6.4million fine to settle a tax fraud case in Spain.
Shakira also used her acceptance speech to thank her Spanish fans for supporting her through the 'good and the bad, in difficult moments', implying that her breakup with Pique was one of them. She then moved to Miami from Barcelona, where she had lived with Pique and their two children, Milan and Sasha.
Pique, on the other hand, has not been having a good time since his split with Shakira. The 36-year-old, who is considered one of the greatest defenders of all-time, retired from football last year after losing his place in the Barcelona team. He has also faced difficulties with his business ventures, such as his investment in the Davis Cup tennis tournament and his video game company Kerad Games.
Pique has also suffered some embarrassing moments, such as falling down a hole by the stage at the launch of his new app, eFootball, which was widely criticised by gamers for its poor quality and glitches. He also had to deal with the backlash from Barcelona fans, who accused him of betraying the club by joining the European Super League project as the president of Kosmos Holding.
Pique has since gone public with his new partner, Clara Chia, a 24-year-old model and influencer who has over 1.5 million followers on Instagram. However, their relationship has also been mocked by Shakira's fans, who have compared Chia to a 'cheap copy' of the pop star.
Shakira and Pique met in 2010, when she was filming the video for Waka Waka, the official song of the World Cup in South Africa, where Pique was playing for Spain. They confirmed their relationship in 2011, and welcomed their first son, Milan, in 2013, and their second son, Sasha, in 2015. They never married, but they were often seen as a happy and stable couple, until they announced their separation in June 2022.
Since then, Shakira has been enjoying her success as a singer, a philanthropist and a businesswoman, while Pique has been facing various challenges as a retired footballer, an entrepreneur and a new boyfriend. It seems that the pop star has been having the upper hand in their post-breakup rivalry, and she is not afraid to show it.
