A landmark documentary has captured the moment the King returned to Buckingham Palace with Queen Camilla after the service at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023.
The newly crowned monarchs waved to the cheering crowds from the balcony, as they celebrated the historic occasion with their family and friends.
The documentary, Charles III: The Coronation Year, which is due to be broadcast on Boxing Day, offers a rare glimpse into the preparations and emotions behind the coronation of the first King of the 21st century.
His sister, the Princess Royal, likens the poignant moment to that of an actor who has performed to the best of their ability, then exited the stage to hefty applause.
She tells the makers of the documentary: "Ask any actor who comes off stage having done a performance that they really put a lot into. It's that kind of relief."
The documentary also features interviews with other members of the royal family, including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and the Duke of Edinburgh, who attended the coronation despite his frail health.
The film also reveals some of the challenges and controversies that the King faced in the lead up to his coronation, such as the public opinion of his marriage to Camilla, the role of the Commonwealth, and the future of the monarchy.
The documentary is expected to be a ratings hit, as millions of viewers tune in to watch the behind-the-scenes footage of the historic event.
Charles III: The Coronation Year will air on BBC One on December 26, 2023, at 8 pm.
