Veteran rapper and DJ Skillz has released a new track titled "Super Fly" where he showcases his lyrical skills and takes aim at some of the current trends in Hip Hop.
The song, which samples Curtis Mayfield's classic "Superfly", finds Skillz rapping over a soulful beat produced by Bink!, who has worked with artists such as JAY-Z, Kanye West, and Rick Ross.
Skillz, who is also known for his annual "Rap Up" series where he recaps the events of the year in a witty and humorous way, uses his sharp pen to address some of the issues he sees in the rap game today.
He criticizes rappers who lie about their lives and achievements, calling them "cap" and "frauds". He also mocks the excessive use of autotune, the lack of originality, and the obsession with social media clout.
He raps:
> I don't care about your followers or your likes / You ain't living what you rap, you just living for the hype / You ain't got no bars, you just got a lot of hooks / You ain't got no flow, you just got a lot of looks / You ain't got no skill, you just got a lot of luck / You ain't got no real, you just got a lot of suck
Skillz also asserts his status as a rap legend who has been in the game for over two decades and has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. He boasts about his accomplishments, his versatility, and his longevity.
He raps:
> I'm super fly, I'm super dope / I'm super skilled, I'm super woke / I'm super real, I'm super rap / I'm super ill, I'm super facts / I'm super OG, I'm super vet / I'm super MC, I'm super threat / I'm super ghost, I'm super writer / I'm super host, I'm super fire
"Super Fly" is Skillz's first solo release of 2023, following his collaboration with DJ Jazzy Jeff on the album The Magnificent 2 in 2022. The track is available on all streaming platforms and on Skillz's website¹.
Skillz, who is also an educator at the University of Richmond and a host of various podcasts and shows, is expected to drop his 20th and final "Rap Up" at the end of the year, according to his social media posts²³.
