Ice Spice, the rising rapper, has shared the unexpected source of inspiration behind her upcoming album titled “Y2K.” In an interview with The Zane Lowe Show, which aired on Friday (May 10), Ice Spice revealed that her mother’s style during her childhood significantly influenced the vibe of her forthcoming project.

“Thankfully, I had my mom, so growing up I’d see her really embody the Y2K aesthetic in its truest form,” she explained. “It’s duck nails, it’s a tramp stamp. It’s brown lip liner no matter where you go. So thankfully I had her as my inspiration growing up. And of course, just like the internet, you feel me? Just like anyone else.”

In the same interview, Ice Spice admitted feeling “nervous” about sampling Sean Paul’s 2002 hit “Gimme the Light.” She expressed concern about securing clearance for an authentic Y2K sample, especially given Sean Paul’s legendary status.

“And that song alone, his ‘Gimme the Light,’ is so iconic that I was so nervous to sample it because I’m like, ‘This isn’t going to get cleared, so what’s the point?’” she said.

However, her worries were put to rest when her sample clearance request was approved. She praised Sean Paul for being receptive to her homage, saying, “Thankfully we got it cleared. Shouts to Sean Paul. He’s so real.”

“Gimmie a Light” serves as the latest offering from Ice Spice’s eagerly awaited debut album, “Y2K.” This album will be her second full-length release following last year’s “Like…?” EP. Named after both her birth year and the turn-of-the-millennium computer programming scare, “Y2K” is expected to be released later this year, although an exact release date has not yet been announced.

Ice Spice has been steadily building anticipation for her album, and her previous single “Think U the Shit (Fart)” further solidified her status as a hitmaker. The track cracked the top 20 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart and amassed over 25 million plays on YouTube alone.
